Mountain bike grips are a small but important part of any successful mountain biking endeavor. Handlebars are a rider's control center and having a secure grip on them is a cornerstone of biking safety. Nobody wants to have his hands slip off and lose control while barreling down a rocky trail. The best mountain biking grips are comfortable, won't rotate on the handlebar, and made with durable material that is tacky and slip-resistant even when wet.

ODI X-Treme Lock On

With its diamond plate texture and grippy knurl pattern, ODI's X-Treme Lock On grip provides plenty of traction, but its clamp system is what makes it really perform. The Lock-On Grip System consists of a screw-on clamp that fastens the grip to the handlebar, eliminating slippage. BikeRadar.com's reviewer called the X-Treme: "Long-life all-weather grips that won't budge on your bars," referring to the clamp system, and the grip's rubber, which "gets grippier as it wears out, meaning they're functional right until they're ready for the bin."

Scott Lock-On Pro

Not happy with providing an aggressive knurl pattern durable rubber for grip, Scott's Lock-On Pro grips sport a locking clamp to prevent slippage as well. Calling them "great grips for trail/all-mountain riding," BikeRadar's Justin Loretz hailed the Lock-On Pro's for their comfort level. He attributed the grip's comfort to the rubber coated outermost portion, rather than "an unforgiving alloy ring to rest the heel of your hand on."

Ergon GX1

Touted by Ergon as "the most comfortable grip on the World Cup race circuit," their GX1 grip features grippy rubber and a lockdown clamp, but its most distinguishing feature is its wing, which provides more area for a rider to put his weight. BikeRadar's Dan Joyce reviewed the GX1, saying, "If you have a lightweight bike with at bars, you need these." Joyce noted that the flared design alleviates pressure on the ulnar nerve, which prevents hand numbness, as well as the wing's flexibility, which "prevent[ed] bumps and road buzz from battering your palms."
