With Bogue Sound, the Intracoastal Waterway and the Newport River as it flows into the Atlantic Ocean right at their doorstep, Morehead City, North Carolina, seafood restaurants provide convenience and delectable fair to those traveling by water or by land. Morehead City is home to two state seaports. Charter boats, fishing, kayaking, nature tours and a variety of outdoor recreation activities abound. Three miles away, the Croatan National Forest Trails make for excellent hiking.

Sanitary Fish Market (Tony's)

Located in the heart of Morehead City, so close to the waters of Bogue Sound you can dock your boat beneath its windows, the Sanitary Fish Market has been welcoming diners since 1938. Also known as Tony's, after one of its original owners, the Sanitary Fish Market was the first seafood restaurant on the waterfront in Morehead. Capt. Ted operated the fish market while Capt. Tony provided the day's catch from his fishing party boat. Sanitary Fish Market remains a favorite of both local and tourist traffic, where generations have gorged themselves on their famous Tar Heel hush puppies, fresh seafood and a smorgasbord of steaks, chicken, salads and veggies. A variety of desserts fills out their menu, including homemade pies, cheesecake and sundaes.

Guests delight in perusing historical clippings and photos on the pine-paneled walls as well as finding their parents' and grandparents' names in the visitors' logs out front. Dining at Tony's remains a "must" on the Morehead City "to do" list. Limited overnight moorage is available with no electricity or water. The restaurant is within a block or two of shopping, book shops and other restaurants.

Capt. Bill's Waterfront Restaurant

Capt. Bill's Waterfront Restaurant is the oldest restaurant in Carteret County. Since it first opened its doors in 1938, the restaurant has been serving its fresh local catch to seafood lovers from miles around. In addition to a huge variety of seafood, Capt. Bill's features 100 percent Black Angus beef, hand-cut steaks and famous homemade desserts, sauces and salad dressings.

With its rich and long history, Capt. Bill's serves made-from-scratch recipes, many of which have been in the Capt. Bill's family for decades, as well as the present owner's generations-old family recipes.

The restaurant lives up to its name, sitting on pilings that look out over scenic Bogue Sound. It is convenient to boat traffic as well as downtown Morehead traffic. Shopping venues and the downtown Morehead area are within easy walking distance.

Take a leisurely walk or sit and relax, feed sea gulls and watch a family of otters play.

Bistro-by-the-Sea Restaurant

Diners in search of a more upscale dining experience can try the Bistro-by-the-Sea Restaurant. The husband-and-wife team owners stay on top of things throughout the restaurant and oversee the food as it is prepared and served. Indeed, the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services official restaurant competition, "Best Dish in North Carolina," presented a 2006 award to Bistro-by-the-Sea in the Independent Restaurant category.

The restaurant serves a wide menu that ranges from local seafood, beef, poultry, soups, salads, vegetables, pastas and made-in-house desserts.
