The Texas Panhandle Plains area boasts hot summer daytime temperatures with cooler nights. Roundup Creek, Blakemore Dam and Stagg Lake provide swimming, boating and fishing. Lela is not far from Rita Blanca, McClellan Creek and Black Kettle National Grasslands, Alibantes Flint Quarries National Monument and the Lake Meredith National Recreation Area. Lela is on speedy I-40, if you're heading somewhere but want to stay outside Amarillo.

West Forty RV Park

Only two miles from Lela, West Forty RV Park is next to I-40 on Route 66. A pasture, not a city, lies behind. There are 55 sites, some covered, all big-rig friendly, with 30 to 50-amp service. Groceries, Internet, laundry, showers, pool and playground complete the amenities. Pets are allowed on leash. Some sites have large trees and some are open. Cash and personal checks are accepted; credit cards are not. There is a hiking trailhead in the campground.

This campground is right on I-40, 11 miles from Lela. Its 10 pull-through sites sit on 10 acres of ground and have 30 to 50 amp service and Internet. Fuel, groceries, a snack bar and gift shop and playground complete the amenities. Tents are allowed, as are pets on a leash.

Pampa City Park

A total of 51 miles northwest on US-60, easy off and back on I-40 if you're headed west, is a traveler's gem. Pampa City Park has 25 big rig pull-through, sites with 30-amp service, restrooms and showers. Pets are permitted on leash. Tenters may camp in a special area--free unless you use the shower. The campground takes reservations. Lake swimming, boating, fishing and hiking are nearby.

Elk Creek RV Park

Just an hour east, a few miles over the Oklahoma border, Elk Creek RV Park will be handy if you're driving east. It has 79 pull-through sites with 30 to 50 amp service, Internet, laundry, cable TV, showers, a sauna and playground.
