Campers looking for a place to park the trailer while exploring the Sierra Nevada mountain range will find a long list of choices. Nature lovers will find the area teeming with sites of interest such as fly-fishing in absolute solitude on Crystal Lake near Mineral King, trekking the 21.4-mile Mt. Whitney Trail or road biking at altitude along U.S. Route 50 northeast of Placerville

Dorst Campground

The Dorst Campground can be found at 6,800 feet in Sequoia National Park, 8 minutes from Stony Creek Village. Campers will find 204 sites to choose from. No hookups are available. The campground has drinking water, flush toilets, a dump station, a fill station and each campsite has one bear-proof food storage box. The campground is open from May to September. This campground is 10 miles from the Giant Forest, the heart of the park and home to the largest stand of trees on earth. Included in this region of the park is General Sherman, a 274.9-foot tree believed to be at least 2,300 years old. Make a reservation as this campground is popular.

Reds Meadow Campground

The Reds Meadow Campground is located at 7,600 feet in Inyo National Forest, 33 minutes from the town of Mammoth Lakes. Those toting a trailer will find 40 campsites to choose from. Maximum site length is 33 feet. An additional 12 tent-only sites are also offered. No hookups are available, although the campground does have a dump station and potable water. Most sites have bear-proof food storage boxes. Of special note is the campground bathhouse, where campers will find showers heated via a nearby hot spring. The campground is open May through September. Reds Meadow is 1 minute from Devils Postpile National Monument, which serves as a trail head for numerous backcountry hiking trails. Reservations are not accepted.

Wrights Lake Campground

Wrights Lake Campground is located at 7,000 feet in Eldorado National Forest, 33 minutes from the small town of Kyburz. Visitors will discover 67 campsites for trailers, tents and RVs. Maximum site length is 50 feet. Sites are primitive and no hookups are offered. The campground does offer bear boxes on 19 sites, fire rings, picnic tables, vault toilets and potable water. The campground is open from June to mid-October. Reservations should be made at least four months in advance. Guests can use the campground as a base for trekking in the Desolation Wilderness, known for challenging trails along the Crystal Range, Horsetail Falls and Pyramid Peak.
