A helmet is a necessity when riding a bicycle, but choosing the right helmet can be difficult. Helmets range in size from the full-face helmets recommended for downhill mountain biking to the light-as-air minimalistic helmets for efficient road cycling. And with so many options, it can be hard to choose the best helmet. The best bicycle helmets are suited for your specific type of riding, are comfortable and will keep your head protected in the event of a crash.

THE Industries: The One

THE's The One full-face mountain bike helmet is a solid choice for downhillers. A wide opening allows for a large field of vision to avoid crashing, and a dual EPS liner and hard-shell exterior offer protection. BikeRadar.com praised The One's "Incredible value and performance," noting its goggle fit and ample protection, saying that when you wear this helmet "you know you'll be safe when you're clobbering your head on the odd tree stump."

Giro Xen

For less hardcore mountain biking, Giro's Xen helmet is an effective option. Calling it a "definitive trail classic [that] proves its immense worth," BikeRadar.com noted the Xen's toughness as well as its comfort, focusing on the helmet ratchet system, which "does a grand job of spreading pressure all the way around the head," as well as the helmet's padding, which "soak[s] up the sweat from your brow effectively."

Catlike Kompact

At a svelte 242g, Catlike's Kompact helmet is ideal for road cyclists and cross-country racers who want a light helmet without sacrificing protection. Despite its light weight, the Kompact provides effective coverage and venting to keep riders cool and safe. BikeRadar.com noted the helmet's light weight and venting, particulary the Kompact's "21 large bug-sucking vents [that] result in one of the best-aired helmets available."

Bell Metropolis

Bell's Metropolis helmet provides just about everything a bicycle commuter could ask for. In addition to head coverage, venting and cushioning, the Metropolis offers an optional package that includes a clip-on rear light, a breathable rain cover and a removable visor that sports a fold-out rear-view mirror. BikeRadar.com said the helmet "feels safe enough to be shot out of a cannon in," and that the Metropolis "is particularly well suited to the rough and tumble life of commuting," citing the bike's compact design, as well as its "rubber bumpers around the base and tough outer shell."
