Clear Lenses are Best Choice
Clear lenses are the first and best choice for night skiing. These lenses will typically have a VLT (visible light transmission) rating of over 80 percent. Make sure the lens is fog proof, as fogging can still occur under night riding conditions. A scratch-resistant coating will improve durability with repeated use.
Yellow and Gold Lenses
Yellow and gold mirror lenses usually have a VLT of 65 to 70 percent. Skiers often choose these lenses first for flat light conditions under stormy skies, but they work equally well for night riding. For someone skiing under a wide variety of conditions, these are a good all-around choice.
Modulator lenses
For riding in high glare conditions, such as halfpipe competitions at night, choose modulator lenses. These lenses automatically adjust to different lighting conditions, and usually have a VLT of between 25 and 65 percent. If the light has a lot of glare, the goggle quickly darkens. If the light lessens, the goggle quickly lightens, enabling good riding under a wide variety of conditions.
