Hotels Near Ennis, Montana
Ennis, Montana, is known as the cradle of recreational fly fishing, but you don't have to know a double haul from a roll cast to partake of the outdoor adventures that await you in Montana's Madison River valley. The same rivers that spawn world-class trout fisheries beckon whitewater rafters, kayakers and canoeists. Hike in nearby Yellowstone National Park or the Lee Metcalf Wilderness; mountain bike in the Beaverhead National Forest; or hit the "art trail" through Ennis, taking in sculptures by noted artists including Jim Dolan and David Lemon, and enjoying the backdrop of a broad valley, stunning mountains and a town center that has carefully preserved its old West feel and friendly spirit.

Ennis has long catered to travelers and the outdoor recreation crowd, so the town is replete with lodging options. Here are four of the best.

El Western Cabins & Lodges

Hearken back to the early days of western hospitality at the El Western, which opened in 1948 with ten cabins hands-built from logs hauled in from the nearby mountains. Today, the El Western has tripled in size, blending modern conveniences such as WiFi and satellite television with traditional knotty pine paneling, ranch oak furniture with brand marks and postcard views of the Madison range. Ask for a kitchen unit for maximum self-sufficiency. Cabins are available May through October, while three larger lodges offer year-round accommodations for up to 12. The El Western is a member of Travelers for Open Land, a cooperative effort that helps travelers contribute to conserving Montana's open spaces, wildlife habitat and scenic vistas.

Fan Mountain Inn

Keep it simple, and the lodging bill low, at Fan Mountain Inn. This classic motel offers simple, comfortable accommodations at super-reasonable rates. Ask for a refrigerator and microwave for a small additional charge. Walk to restaurants and shops in town, and to the Madison River, from your room. You'll find the rooms clean and the staff friendly. If you're on a bike, watch the deep gravel in the parking lot.

Sportsman's Lodge

After a long day on the trail, you might be thankful that the Sportsman's Lodge can provide nearly everything you need until you head out again in the morning. Relax in your cabin or motel room, then stroll over to the lodge to find dinner, have a drink at the bar or take your chances at the casino. The restaurant serves lunch and dinner seven days a week and breakfast on weekends. The Sportsman's Lodge is another Ennis establishment that has been around since the 1940s, and its rustic log cabins mirror the stacked lodgepole pine construction of the historic lodge. If you want to hit the links instead of the trail, the Madison Meadows golf course is a five-minute walk from your cabin door.

Wade Lake Cabins

Relish your stay in one of five exceedingly quiet and secluded cabins tucked along the shore of Wade Lake in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, 40 miles south of Ennis, six miles from the nearest pavement and a world away from telephone, television and Internet. Cabins are fully equipped---just bring a bath towel, which you'll use in the shared bath house. Cabin power, generated by silent water turbines, is for lights only, so don't expect to plug in your cell phone, or have reception, for that matter. Use your cabin as a base camp for hiking, mountain biking, canoeing and kayaking, and in the mornings and evenings, enjoy world-class bird watching and wildlife viewing. During the winter, Wade Lake Cabins offers access to nearly 22 miles of professionally groomed cross-country ski trails, and countless acres of backcountry skiing and telemarking terrain.
