State Campgrounds in Peterson Bay, Alaska

Peterson Bay provides an ideal setting for the outdoor enthusiast looking to experience an Alaskan adventure. The area has an abundant wildlife, including otters, seals, eagles, whales, porpoises and seabirds. The bay is surrounded by Kachemak Bay State Park with its 400,000 acres of forests and mountains. Activities such as fishing, boating, kayaking, hunting, hiking and mountain sports are available. There are many campgrounds available within the state park, such as Emerald Lake, China Poot Bay and Grewingk Creek.

Emerald Lake

Emerald Lake Campground is located in the Kachemak Bay State Park and is only accessible by boat and by hiking the Humpy Creek Trail, which leads to the lake. Campers can also hike the 6.4 mile Emerald Lake Trail which can be accessed from Grewingk Glacier Trail and Humpy Creek Trail. Emerald Lake campground has alpine surroundings with scenic sights of the Kachemak Bay and Portlock Plateau. This campsite has two wooden tent platforms, one of which is located along the gravel beach. Toilet facilities are provided. The campsite has scenic water and mountain views, but campers should be cautious because there are bears and mountain goats on the surrounding high ridges.

China Poot Bay and Lake

China Poot Bay and China Poot Lake are campsites within the state park. Camping sites are available at the China Poot Bay hiking trail head and also at China Poot Lake. There is a public use cabin located on the east shore of China Poot Lake (rental fees and reservations are required). This camp can be accessed via a water taxi from Homer. Campers can hike the 2.6 mile China Poot lake trail, which includes steep climbs and an elevation gain of 500 ft. The campground has tent platforms, picnic tables and outhouses. Recreational activities at China Poot Bay include clam digging, red salmon fishing, and lots of marine wildlife sightings.

Grewingk Creek and Glacier

The Grewingk Creek and Grewingk Glacier Lake Areas of the state park offer campgrounds with tent pads and outhouses. Water is available for the lake and should be treated or boiled for safety. The camp is accessible by boat and by hiking. Trail head access is the Glacier Spit trail head where there is also a campsite. The hike to the Grewingk Creek meanders through natural sights like mature forest of large spruce, low alders, shrubs and cottonwoods. The Glacier Spit Trail intersects the Glacier Lake Trail where more campsites are available. Campers should take precautions as black bears frequent the area. Other features of the camp's surrounding areas are Foehn Ridge, Grewingk Glacier and outwash flats scenic views. Activities include mountain climbing, backpacking, fishing and wildlife viewing.
