Mountain Bike Trails Near Traverse City, Michigan

Traverse City is found in Northern Lower Michigan along the Grand Traverse Bay and the Pere Marquette State Forest. Most of the bike trails in Traverse City also serve as cross-country skiing trails in the winter. The Traverse City Convention and Visitors Bureau advises that mountain bikes are not permitted on any trails at the nearby Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

Boardman Lake Trail

The Boardman Lake Trail is located along the eastern shore of Boardman Lake in Traverse City. This trail extends two miles through a wooded area and features a parking area at the north and south trailheads. Half of the trail is paved, while the other half consists of crushed limestone.

Leelanau Trail

The Leelanu Trail is a 15.5 mile trail with approximately 8.5 paved miles and seven miles of hard-packed dirt. Restrooms are available year-round at the Inland Seas Education Association at the north end of the trail. During the summer months, a portable toilet is placed approximately two miles from the south end of the trail. Five parking areas are located along the trail for your convenience.

Muncie Lake Pathway

The Muncie Lake Pathway is an 11.5 mile multi-purpose trail for hikers, bicyclists and cross-country skiers inside the Pere Marquette State Forest. This trail features five loops and is rated easy for hikers and bicyclists. The trail is groomed regularly during the winter to accommodate novice cross-country skiers.

Vasa Pathway

The Vasa Pathway is also located in the Pere Marquette State Forest. This multi-purpose trail stretches 16.7 miles through wooded areas and contains both challenging and easy sections. Pere Marquette contains more than 65 miles of hiking and biking trails, although many of these paths are found outside of Traverse City.
