In its heyday, Wildwood, New Jersey, was the Doo-Wop capitol of the East Coast. The Historic District includes hotels that thrived in the 1950s and 1960s before wrecking balls came along and felled many of them to make way for condominiums. But some are still here and still thriving. Think buildings tricked out in turquoise and pink, plastic palm trees, the beach, and, of course, that Boardwalk. A stroll in either direction from the Historic District offers a wide range of activities from miniature golf and arcades to water parks and amusement rides.

Newport Beach Resort

The Boardwalk runs along the beach side of Ocean Avenue, so this is the location you're looking for if you want to be where the action is. The Newport Beach Resort is directly across the street from the Boardwalk at 4900 Ocean Avenue. If Wildwood isn't enough for you, this establishment offers limousine service to Atlantic City. Rooms range from standard singles for the thrifty to two-room oceanfront efficiencies, $74 in the off-season to $359 on Fourth of July weekend in 2010. Note that they're closed in the dead of winter. The Newport Beach Resort offers a pool, kiddie pool and sun decks.

Days Inn Suites

An enjoyable seven-block walk along the Boards will take you from this establishment to the amusement pier with all sorts of good stuff in between. All the rooms are suites, so their rates can be a little lofty depending on the season, but you can split it up among friends. The two-bedroom suite offers a kitchenette and living room and sleeps six. There's also a two-bedroom, two-bath "super suite" that sleeps eight. Poolside suites and the super suites are only available from March through the first week of November. As of 2010, an oceanfront suite runs $79 a night in the off-season, $264 a night at the height of the summer. Pools are heated and barbecue grills are provided.

Nantucket Motel

A block from the amusement pier and built mid-century, the Nantucket is family-friendly because of its proximity to the rides, but some great restaurants and clubs are within a stone's throw also. Accommodations run from a standard king to two-bedroom apartments. Standards start at $55 a night mid-week in the off-season and top out at $139 a night in the summer of 2010. Apartments range from $95 a night mid-week in the off-season to $289 a night on a weekend at the peak of summer. The Nantucket offers a swimming pool, kiddie pool, ping pong, a sun deck and barbecue grills.

Casa Del Sol Motel

Virtually next door to the Nantucket is the Casa Del Sol. Restaurants, clubs, shopping and amusement piers are all close enough to make your visit to Wildwood easy on your feet if you stay here. In the heart of the Historic District, the Casa Del Sol was recently renovated. Accommodations run from $90 to $229 in season in 2010. And rooms run the gamut from deluxe with two double beds, refrigerator, microwave and full bath, to two-bedroom suites with all of the above plus an extra bath and living room. Among the offerings here are a heated pool, two separate sun decks and barbecue grills.

The Other Boardwalks

When looking for accommodations, be sure to make the distinction between North Wildwood, Wildwood Crest and Wildwood. Only Wildwood facilities boast the Doo-Wop Historic District and offer the wide range of activities to be found near the new Convention Center.
