Campgrounds near Walnut Grove, Minnesota

Walnut Grove. Minnesota, was made famous through its mention in the books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The town sits among many widely spaced lakes and small parks. The campgrounds of the area usually fare ound in one of the state parks serving the region. Travelers can select from parks with extra amenities or sites close to water and trails.

Lake Shetek State Park

Lake Shetek State Park is located 13 miles southwest of Walnut Grove. The park offers a wide variety of campsites, including 97 drive-in sites, lakeside sites, cart-in sites and a group camp. A majority of the sites offer electric hookups. Showers, flush toilets and a seasonal dump station are provided for camper use. The park is made up primarily of abandoned pioneer farmland. The property offers 14 miles of hiking trails and a 6-mile paved bike trail. A swimming beach is available on Lake Shetek. Boat and canoe launches supply access to the lake, and the park has boats for rent.

Camden State Park

Camden State Park supplies 80 drive-in campsites for most of the year, but only 35 sites are open in winter. A limited number of pull-through sites are available with a capacity of 60 feet for total vehicle length. Electric service is available at 29 sites. Additionally, a group camp and horse camps are available. Showers, flush and vault toilets are provided, along with a seasonal dump station. Guests of the park can swim in a spring-fed pool and canoe Brawner Lake and Redwood River. The park offers Dakota Valley Trail access and diverse habitats to explore. A paved bike trail from the town of Lynd connects to the park, and there are 4.25 miles of bike trails within the park. The facility, 24 miles northwest of Walnut Grove, supports cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter.

Valhalla Island

Valhalla Island, 25 miles from Walnut Grove, provides RV and tent camping accommodations underneath shade trees. Group sites also are available. All sites comes with full hookups, laundry and restroom access. Sites are rented by the day, week, month or season. Dining is located within walking distance of the campground. The park includes an arcade, country store and emergency storm shelter. Outdoor game supplies are offered through the office. The facility is located on Lake Shetek--the largest lake in southwestern Minnesota--where guests can experience boating or swimming on the sandy beach.
