On the surface, mountain bike tubes don't vary much from company to company. When selecting a tube, the most important things to look for are the correct size and type of valve. Mountain bike tires usually come in size 26 or 29 and feature a variety of widths. They are either Presta or Schrader valve tubes.

Pyramid Thorn Resistant Tube

A heavy-duty tube designed to stand up to tough trails, the Pyramid is made to protect against damage from thorns and other sharp hazards with heavy wall construction. The tubes are recognized for puncture resistance, rugged build and capability for holding air. One thing to beware of when purchasing thorn-resistant or heavy-duty tubes is that they don't make good spares because of their large size and weight. They are difficult to fit into a saddlebag and will also add weight to the bike. Pyramid Thorn Resistant tubes come in 29- and 26-inch sizes and feature both Schrader and Presta valves.

Panaracer Super Tube

The Panaracer Super Tube is an extra thick tube that Panaracer claims is 50 percent thicker than average butyl tubes. The extra thickness helps to protect against punctures and flats. Tubes like this are especially useful when biking in the desert and other terrain where small, spiky plants exist. It is known for durability and holding air. The Super Tube comes in both valve types and a number of sizes.

Slime Self-Healing Smart Tubes

You might have heard of Slime sealant, which you can add to tubes to protect against flats. The sealant will automatically seal small holes in your tube, preventing a flat tire. To save you the trouble of manually filling up tubes, Slime also offers self-healing tubes that come prefilled with sealant. The sealant will automatically fill puncture holes up to one-eighth-inch in size. Slime tubes come in Presta and Schrader and fit a variety of tire sizes.
