New York City is known for its expensive accommodations, but even in pricey Manhattan it is possible to find reasonable, even cheap hotels, especially if you are willing to share with three other people in what is known as a quad room. What you save on the hotel you can spend exploring the Big Apple.

Located in the longtime trendy area of Chelsea, the Chelsea Savoy Hotel enjoys a prime location. The hotel is within walking distance of the Chelsea Art Museum and The Roxy nightclub, and nearly every subway line has a stop on 23rd Street, allowing guests quick access to all parts of New York City. The quad room rates in 2010 ranged from $155 to $395, which includes a private bath, cable TV, down pillows and a continental breakfast.

The Cosmopolitan Hotel in Tribeca has quad rooms for as little as $159 (the price in 2010). It offers American breakfast, free Wi-Fi, hair dryer, satellite TV and air conditioning. The hotel is conveniently located near Chinatown, the galleries and fashion houses of Soho, and Little Italy. Within walking distance of Wall Street and the Financial District, the Cosmo is also right in the middle of the hot nightlife of Tribeca.

Gershwin Hotel

Rates at this French-influenced hangout for artists and models start at $55 for a bunk bed double (in 2010) with a private bath. Larger rooms can accommodate as many as six people for $300. The hostel-dormitory area of the hotel has bunks for as little as $30 per person, but the bath facilities are shared. The owners have created an artist-in-residence program and guests are offered a free guided art walk. Smack in the middle of Manhattan, it is a short walk from the fashion and flower districts, the Empire State Building and Koreatown, as well as numerous nightclubs and restaurants of every ethnicity.

Chelea Star Hotel

The 6-foot-tall statue of Betty Boop that dominates the lobby lets you know that you are in for a unique experience at the Chelsea Star. A lively, artsy, brightly colored place, the Star offers dorm rooms for $29 per person (as of 2010) and a quad room with a private bath for $119. The hotel has an Internet kiosk and although there is no restaurant on the premises, the helpful staff will deliver any kind of food you can think of to your room.
