Pocatello, Idaho, is a midsize city on the banks of the Portneuf River. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy hiking trails, mountain and road biking, river rafting, fly-fishing, rock climbing and mountaineering in the region. In winter, there are opportunities for telemark and alpine-touring, downhill skiing and snowshoeing. Wildlife- and bird-watchers can try spotting elk, moose, bear, coyote, fox, bald and golden eagles, and trumpeter swans.

Pocatello KOA

The Pocatello KOA offers sites for RVs up to 80 feet. Site hookups include 30- or 50-amp electric, water, sewer, cable TV and Wi-Fi. Pets are welcome at the KOA, and there is a play area where your dog can romp off-leash. Showers, bathrooms, picnicking facilities, coin-operated laundry, a guest house and playgrounds are available for guest use. The American Falls Reservoir is within a 30-minute drive. Visitors to the reservoir can canoe, fish and kayak. Craters of the Moon National Monument is a two-hour drive to the west. Massacre Rocks State Park

Macabre name aside, the Massacre Rocks State Park presents a convenient location to the Pocatello/America Falls region. The park is part of the Idaho system and has been designated a historic park. Hikers can spend time walking trails that were once part of the Oregon Trail, the wagon route pioneers used to make their way west. The Snake River runs next to the campground, and there are canoes and kayaks for rent at the park. RV sites have 30-amp electric, water and sewer connections. Pets are allowed but must remain leashed in the park. Guests can use the showers at the campground. Bouldering problems can be found in the park on the many glacial erratics strewn about the land.
