Located 67 miles north of Tampa, Chassahowitzka abuts the Withlacoochee State Forest and the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge was founded in 1941 as a refuge for migratory birds and native wildlife and is accessible only by boat. This part of Florida is known as the Nature Coast. It is a favorite getaway for birders, anglers, paddlers and those who appreciate nature. The main feature is the Chassahowitzka River, which is formed by small streams and several springs. Nearby are museums and parks that tell the history of this area.

Chassahowitzka River Campground

Located on the Chassahowitzka River, the campground offers 52 RV and tent sites and 36 sites offer electric, water and sewer connections. The remaining 16 sites have water. On-site amenities include a bathhouse, laundry, a small store with convenience items, shuffleboard courts, a public boat ramp with canoe and boat rentals and a horseshoe pit. Pets are permitted on leash. Proof of vaccination is required upon registration.

The river offers freshwater fishing and saltwater fishing after a short boat ride to the Gulf of Mexico. More than 250 species of birds can be found here as well as reptiles such as the American alligator, amphibians and mammals including manatees. The springs that feed the river are accessible to those with an adventurous spirit with either a kayak or canoe.

The park is operated by the Citrus County Parks Department in cooperation with the Southwest Florida Water Management District.
