Fort Plain is a small country town that lies in the Mohawk Valley, just alongside the same-named river in upstate New York. Very rural in character and feel, it is nonetheless very convenient with its location just off Interstate 90. Close to Rural Grove State Forest, there are lots of opportunities for camping, fishing, hiking, and boating in the area. Visitors can relax and choose from many restaurants after a long day in the country.

Saltsman's Hotel was opened in 1813 as Apollo Hall, and was run by seven generations of the Saltsman family over the years. It is one of the oldest continuously operating restaurants in New York. The parlor offers lots of historical tidbits and the place itself will make you feel as if you've traveled back in time. The restaurant is open Easter through Halloween, for lunch and dinner, and reservations are accepted. They also provide banquet services and takeout orders, and there is a full bar. Some of the popular dishes are their baked onion casserole, creamed potatoes, fried chicken and corn fritters with syrup, as well as the grilled ham steaks and elderberry pie. People travel from all around when the milkweed is in season, and the restaurant is proud of the dish and feels it draws customers back to Saltsman's time and again.
