Campgrounds in the Portage, Michigan, area
Portage is located in central Lower Michigan and offers visitors the amenities of a bigger city with the feel of a small community. Campers will find a variety of campgrounds in the surrounding area that are conveniently close to recreational opportunities that include hiking in Custer State Recreation Area and fishing in the three lakes of Cold Brook Park.

Markin Glen Park

Markin Glen Park is located six miles northwest of Portage in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It offers 38 camping sites with concrete pads, full hookups and fire rings along with picnic tables and small grass yards. Facility amenities include modern restrooms with private showers, dump station and picnic pavilion as well as a large pond with swimming beach. Recreational activities include tennis courts, baseball fields and soccer field as well as several miles of hiking trails in the forested area adjacent to the campground.

Fort Custer Recreation Area

Fort Custer Recreation Area is a 3,000-acre park located 20 miles northeast of Portage in Augusta, Michigan. It offers a 219-site campground that includes electric hookups, picnic tables and fire rings along with modern restrooms that include private showers. Facility amenities include a dump station, picnic pavilion and playground as well a beach house. The park has three lakes and a river for guests to enjoy with a large beachfront on one lake and fishing access points on all. Fort Custer Recreation Area has 25 miles of multi-use trails that run through the hilly forested terrain and have special advanced trails for mountain bikers.

Cold Brook Park Campground

Cold Brook Park is located 15 miles east of Portage in Climax, Michigan. It has 270 acres and offers 51 camp sites split in two areas, with one having partial hookups and the other a rustic area. The campground has modern restrooms with private showers, a dump station and picnic pavilion. The park gives access to three lakes, all having a boat launch and fishing pier, and one having a large beach and picnic shelter. Other amenities include a Frisbee golf course, baseball field and horseshoe pit along with a playground and volleyball court. There are several hiking trails that run throughout the wooded 270 acres of the park with many wildlife viewing opportunities.
