When you're cycling in the wintertime, sometimes shoes and socks just aren't enough to keep your feet warm. For riders who want warm, comfortable feet during the coldest, wettest rides, waterproof overshoe accessories are a necessity. The best waterproof overshoes for road biking provide insulation and combine water resistance with breathability, keeping riders warm and dry for the duration of their ride.

Trek Road Shoe Cover

With 3 mm of thermal neoprene, Trek's Road Shoe Covers won't leave your feet cold. The durable rubber soles are built to last and a rear-zippered entry allows for easy entry and exit. In a review on BikeRadar.com, Jeff Jones complimented the Treks for their warmth, saying that the covers will "keep your feet warm over a wide range of temperatures" and that despite being thinner than older versions, "it still does the job on those cold mornings." The neoprene is water-resistant, rather than waterproof, but Jones maintains that they work well "unless you're heading out for three hours in a cold downpour."

Look Ultra

In addition to their water- and wind-blocking ability, Look Ultra's neoprene shoe covers are quite versatile. The Ultra's wide opening and zippered entry make them easy to enter and exit, and they fit easily over mountain bike shoes as well as road shoes. In a Gear of the Day review on Bicycling.com, David L'Heureux called the Ultras "winter-riding lifesavers" due to how easy it was to swap the waterproof and windproof covers from shoe to shoe for winter rides, adding that in inclement weather, "ease of use is priceless."

PRO Tarmac H2O

With a waterproof coating and sealed seams, PRO's Tarmac H2O bike shoe covers keep you dry and remain breathable, but those aren't the only benefits. Kevlar protection on the nose adds durability, and an anti-bacterial and insulating bamboo/charcoal fleece lining keeps feet warm and odor-free. BikeRadar.com's reviewer called them "exceptionally waterproof," adding that "no water at all got inside during our wet weather rides."
