With gas prices spiking, RV owners feel pinched. While many national RV clubs hold rallies and conventions at spots of interest for RV owners, more and more motor-home owners have found enjoyable ways to use their RVs while avoiding steep gas prices. Many RV clubs in Oregon offer the same activities as the national clubs without the cross-country mileage. Along with offering gatherings and rallies, they also offer year-round activities close to home.

Classic RV Club

The Classic RV Club, formed in 1992, consists of age-diverse families in and around the Portland, Oregon, area. Currently, the club is made up of about 20 families, but they are always welcoming new members. The club meets for social gatherings in the Portland area monthly from December to February to discuss upcoming events, charitable work, and itineraries for the upcoming travel season. The club plans 5 or 6 outings each year, and very rarely travel over 150 miles from Portland to their destinations. The outings run from Friday to Sunday, and club members try to plan outings near festivals or other points of interest. A pot-luck social, games and other group activities make up a typical gathering. In the past, some of these activities have included Halloween costume parties and line dances. Club membership dues are $25 annually.

FMCA--Northwestern Chapter

The Family Motor Coach Association (FMCA) for motor-home owners claims that they are the largest RV club in the world. The club is divided into over 500 chapters across the United States, including the Northwestern Area Chapter, which is based in Oregon. While members of the chapter receive the same access to privileges that national FMCA members enjoy, events and rallies held within the northwest region of the country attract prospective members. Members of the FMCA receive discounts to RV parks, roadside and emergency assistance and a monthly RV publication. Additionally, members of the Northwest Area Chapter receive a quarterly newsletter about upcoming chapter activities. Growing rapidly, the chapter accepted 586 new member families in November of 2009. Membership costs $45 per family for new members and $35 per year for annual renewals.
