Traveling with your children can be challenging. But going on a cruise with your teen provides a specific set of challenges. You have to balance a child-friendly atmosphere with the need for activities that specifically appeal to a teen audience. However, a number of cruises exist that are specially designed for teens and their families.

Carnival Cruises

The Carnival Cruise company has two cruise lines that cater to teenagers. The first, the Splendor ship, offers video games, movies, karaoke and dance competitions, as well as an adult-like dance club called Club 02. The other line, the Carnival Liberty, has the Mocktail Party, a mixer for teens on the first night of the cruise. Kids between the ages of 12 and 18 are allowed in the teen dance club from 9:30 p.m. to 10:45 p.m. before the club reopens for the 16 to 18 set again at 11 p.m. There also are plenty of activities for younger teens, including movies, karaoke and swimming.

Norwegian Cruise Lines has two cruises designed for families with teens. The first is the Pearl line. The line has an area called the Metro Center, modeled after a New York City subway station that includes plasma televisions, a hang-out area, a video-game arcade and computers. The food area includes such teen favorites as chicken fingers and hot dogs, with open seating and no wait. The Norwegian Dawn line has a singing competition, a basketball court, a video-game arcade and a dance club made just for teens.

Princess Cruises

The Princess Cruises line Grand Princess has a range of activities for teens. For the sports-oriented teen, there is a gym, a sports court, a putting golf course with nine holes, and four swimming pools. The ports of call on the line (Cozumel, Costa Maya, the Grand Cayman and Belize) allow adventure-minded teens an opportunity to see exotic locations and rub elbows with the wildlife. Other teens might be more interested in Nintendo games, karaoke or the sun deck.
