Campers seeking an ideal campsite in the Chester, California, area will find there are choices to be made. Once the tent is popped up, naturalists can discover area outdoor highlights that include road biking from 3,000 to 10,000 feet along the 187-mile Lassen Scenic Byway, trekking through cinder cones and lava beds in Lassen Volcanic National Park and spotting northern pygmy owl along Lake Almanor.

Gurnsey Creek Campground

Gurnsey Creek Campground is located 23 minutes west of Chester. Campers choose between 53 camping sites. The campground offers drinking water, picnic tables and vault toilets. Sites are primitive and offer no hookups for those in RVs. Reservations must be made four days in advance. This campsite is 15 minutes from Wilson Lake, a worthy location for anglers seeking to bring dinner back to the tent.

Almanor Campground

Almanor Campground is located 17 minutes south of Chester. Fifty-two campgrounds are available to visitors. The campground offers flush and vault toilets, a boat ramp, a beach and an amphitheater. Reservations must be made four days in advance. Trails are available to hikers and bikers, while a lake and stream near the campground provides opportunities for fishing, water skiing and boating.

North Shore Campground

North Shore Campground is located four minutes from Chester. Campers will discover 133 campsites. Tent sites are available with water. RV sites have hookups. The campground has bathrooms, showers, laundry, a store, playground, library with Wi-Fi, picnic tables and fire rings on each site and a dump station. Water lovers will be pleased to note that this campground sits right on Almador Lake, and kayak, canoe and fishing boat rentals are offered.
