Townsend, Tennessee bills itself as "The Peaceful Side of the Smokies." Its location along the Little River and proximity to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, makes Townsend draws RV vacationers. Fishing, hiking, mountain biking and wildlife viewing are popular outdoor activities in the area, and local museums and summer festivals keep the area's Appalachian heritage alive.

Big Meadow Family Campground

Big Meadow Family Campgrounds, located two miles north of Townsend along the banks of the Little River, features 77 level sites, many of which feature concrete pads for stability. Fifty-eight of these RV sites are pull-through for accommodating larger rigs. Full hookups (30, 50 amps). Amenities at Big Meadow Family Campground includes a camp store, exercise room, game room, laundry facilities and climate-controlled bath house. The campground offers access to trout fishing in the Little River. Inner tube rentals are available next door to the campground, and golfing is available two miles away.

Tremont Campground & Log Cabins

Tremont Campground & Log Cabins is located two miles west of Townsend, and includes 20 acres of land with a 2,000-foot shoreline along the Little River. The resort offers riverfront and off-river sites, with water and both 30- and 50-amp electrical service at all RV sites. Sewer hookups are available at many but not all RV sites, and a dump station is available for an extra fee. Daily and monthly rates are available, and all rates are based on two people per site, extra campers over 5 years old require a special fee. Amenities include a swimming pool with a separate kiddie pool, camp store and game room. Laundry facilities and three bath houses are available on-site. Volleyball and basketball are popular sports on the campground and a playground is available for children. Outdoorsmen appreciate fishing in the Little River, as well as inner tubing and nature watching.

Lazy Daze Campground

Lazy Daze Campground is located along the Little River, one mile from the entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and features RV campsites on packed gravel. All sites are full hookups. In addition, each site comes with cable TV, Wi-Fi and a campfire ring. Cabin rentals are available, and tent camping is allowed on the gravel sites. Amenities include a swimming pool, camp store, a picnic pavilion for groups and a game room. Laundry and shower facilities are available on-site. Outdoor activities include fishing in the Little River. Biking is also a popular outdoor activity, with a five-mile bike trail located nearby.
