Campgrounds Near North Carolina Stone Mountain State Park

The scenic views afforded by the overlooks on the Blue Ridge Parkway make the casual drive long remembered. A short detour from the drive into Stone Mountain Park reveals one of the natural gems so frequently obscured by the majestic mountains and forests of this area. A 600-foot granite dome contrasts with the surrounding greenery luring climbers to scale its face. Hikers tramping through the woodlands might stumble upon waterfalls, and fisherman can target the trout in the park's streams. Overnight stays can be had in the park and at other campgrounds located along some of the region's natural attractions.

Miller's Camping

A 25-mile drive around the park on the Blue Ridge Parkway will take visitors to Miller's Camping. The tent camping, full hookup RV sites and apartment rentals are accompanied by the woods, mountains and scenic views this section of the country is famous for. A country store on the campground serves as a gathering spot for guests to share discovered secrets of the surrounding forests. Amenities include a bathhouse, hot showers, wireless Internet and laundry. The 2010 rate for tent campsites begin at $18 per night.

New River Campground

New River Campground offers tent and RV sites with water and electric hookups along the New River. Fishing and canoeing are popular draws for this campground located 21 miles from Stone Mountain State Park. The campground encourages river exploration with canoe, kayak and tube rentals. Guests might use this opportunity to navigate the Class I, II, and III rapids found on a 10-mile trip down the river. Campground facilities include a bathhouse, hot showers, playground, camp store, riverfront benches and picnic areas, and rental cabins.

Stone Mountain State Park

A granite dome dotted with chestnut oaks is the star attraction at Stone Mountain State Park. Abundant rock climbing, fly-fishing and hiking encourage visitors to take advantage of the developed campground suitable for tent or RV camping. Electricity and water hookups, a bathhouse, hot showers, picnic area, fire ring and dump station ensure a comfortable stay. Backcountry campsites can be found near Widow's Creek, which require a short hike and any necessary supplies including water.
