Nags Head, on North Carolina's Outer Banks, is located on the shoreline, providing water sports and beach combing adventures. For hikers, the area is a trail paradise, featuring hikes with nature preserves, sand dunes and lighthouses. Try the Nags Head Woods, Jockey's Ridge or one of the ecological preserve trails. After a day of hiking, return to accommodations at one of Nags Head's motels, each located a quick trip from the trails and offering a range of amenities to ensure a pleasant stay.

Blue Heron Motel

Located directly on the ocean, the Blue Heron Motel offers private balconies (all rooms are non-smoking and face the ocean), double beds, Wi-Fi, mini-fridge and microwave in every room. After a long day on the trails, unwind in the motel's heated indoor pool, spa or outdoor pools. Hike rained out? The Blue Heron offers passes to the local YMCA. Sports enthusiasts will enjoy the local golf, hang gliding and fishing available nearby. Explore Roanoke Island Festival Park, which offers a museum, 16th-century sailing vessel and exploration of 400 years of Outer Banks life. No pets allowed.

Owens' Motel

A variety of room styles are available at the Owens' Motel, including ocean view rooms, courtyard rooms and apartments/efficiencies. Rooms include refrigerator, microwave and one to two beds; Internet access is not available. For hikers traveling together, the apartment provides a full kitchen, living and dining area, plus linens and bath towels. Head across the street to Owens' Restaurant, serving casual dinner seven nights a week. Hike the nearby Jockey's Ridge State Park, with the East Coast's tallest living sand dune and a bird preserve. The Owens' Motel does not accept pets.

Surf Side Hotel

Stay at the Surf Side Hotel to go directly from your room to hiking on the beach. A variety of rooms are available, including ones with one to two beds, efficiencies and honeymoon suites. All units include microwave and refrigerator; rooms are all non-smoking and do not have Internet access.

Hikers can explore the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, with more than 513 acres including colonist reconstruction and Elizabethan architecture or the Jockey's Ridge State Park, which attracts over a million hikers a year. No pets allowed.
