Mountain boots have to put up with some difficult situations; they have to support and protect feet over a wide variety of terrain and conditions and do so under varying amounts of weight, depending on the wearer's packs. In addition, mountain boots need to do so while providing comfort during long treks. The best mountain boots are made of light, sturdy material and can do all of the above while remaining as lightweight as possible.

Scarpa Alpha

For icy excursions, Scarpa's Alpha mountain boot is the way to go. For the highest altitudes and the lowest temperatures, double plastic boots are a necessity, and at 5 lbs., 4 oz. per pair, the Alpha is your lightest choice. Thermal felt insoles keep your feet warm, while the wet grip Skywalk sole helps you keep your footing on ice. Backpacking Magazine editor Steve Howe reviewed the Alpha, praising its precision-molded fit and low weight, calling it "not only the lightest way to stay warm, it's also the most comfortable."

Asolo Lothar GV

At just under 3 lbs. per pair, Asolo's Lothar GV midcut boots are lightweight and comfortable but provide support when it's needed. Its Gore-Tex liner keeps moisture out while allowing the foot to breathe, and the Vibram Ascent rubber sole provides traction on all kinds of terrain. Featured in Backpacking.com's Gear Guide, the Asolo GV was hailed for its versatility, as it "gave great support when descending loose, sandy shale, and easily handled heavy loads in off-trail terrain," while remaining "as comfortable as a sturdy dayhiking boot on trail."

Lafuma X Light Mid OT

At a svelte 2 lbs., Lafuma's X Light Mid OT hiking shoe is tougher than it has any right to be. With an OutDry waterproof breathable membrane and a synthetic suede and mesh upper, the X Light keeps feet dry from within and without, and the dual-system lacing allows wearers to get a precise fit. In a review on Backpacker.com, the writer lauded its toughness, saying that "it's built for anything," with one tester saying that it was "among the most versatile hiking shoes I've ever used."
