Mexico Beach is situated between Panama City and St. Joseph Bay, on northwestern Florida's Gulf Coast. For campers, the Mexico Beach area offers a central location that is surrounded by outdoor attractions. In addition to the beach activities, fishing and the offshore scuba diving, St. Joseph Bay and the waters around Panama City offer opportunities for sea kayaking. Inland there is the hiking, canoeing and nature-watching at the Apalachicola River Water Management Area and Tate's Hell State Forest. Finally, camping has the virtue of being a lot cheaper than a hotel room in a touristy beach town.

Rustic Sands Resort Campground

Although primarily an RV campground, Rustic Sands does offer sites to tent-campers on its lightly wooded campground. However, there is no separate tent area, so be prepared to have a pop-up trailer or an RV as a neighbor. The camping services at Rustic Sands include fire pits, picnic area, barbecue grills, camp store with propane sales, coin laundry and showers. Other amenities include a private fishing pond, swimming pool, playground, fitness center, pet area, shuffleboard court and Wi-Fi access. Located in Mexico Beach itself, St. Joseph Bay and East Bay are just a few miles to the north and south respectively, and the RV park has convenient access to the beach.

T.H. Stone Memorial St. Joseph Peninsula State Park

This state park occupies most of the spit of land that encloses St. Joseph Bay, and it offers a pair of camping options. The developed and shady campgrounds of Gulf Breeze and Shady Pines sit behind the park's sand dunes area, and so both have easy access to the beach. They offer a combined total of 119 joint tent-and-RV campsites, with water and electrical hookups, and both campgrounds are serviced by their own bathhouse.

The other option is primitive camping in the park's wilderness preserve. There are no facilities in the preserve, so campers are responsible for treating their own water and using proper sanitation procedures. Also, as there is no trash service in the preserve, all campers are required to operate on a "pack-in, pack-out" footing. Other accommodations are available in the form of rental cabins. The park offers on-site outdoor activities in the form of boating (boat ramp available), fishing, three hiking trails, nature-watching and snorkeling. For those who want to hike in the forest, Tate's Hell State Forest is 25 miles to the west.

Indian Pass Campground

Indian Pass Campground is located between Port St. Joe and Apalachicola, roughly 25 miles south of Mexico Beach. It offers a mix of tent and RV camping, as well as rental cabins. The shaded tent campground is along the waterfront, facing St. Vincent Island and St. Vincent Sound. The facilities include a bathhouse, camp store, coin laundry and outdoor swimming pool. The campground is situated adjacent to an opening out of St. Vincent Sound and into the Gulf of Mexico, making it ideal for both fishermen and sea kayakers. The location is flanked by T.H. Stone Memorial St. Joseph Peninsula State Park to the west and Tate's Hell State Forest to the east. For eating a dinner that wasn't cooked in camp there is the Indian Pass Raw Bar just down the road.
