About 90 miles from Atlanta, Lavonia, Georgia--the self-proclaimed big-time small town--provides the natural beauty of Lake Hartwell and Piedmont area of the Appalachian Mountains and the excitement of the recently re-sanctioned Lavonia Dirt Track. Nestled in Franklin County, Lavonia's Tugaloo State Park marks this area as the centerpiece of many of Georgia's campgrounds. Its proximity to the Savannah River, Margiebell Lake and Rice Creek makes the Lavonia area suitable for camping, water sports and hiking.

Tugaloo State Park campground

Located in Lavonia, this 393-acre park provides activities and campsites suitable for novice campers and experienced campers as well. A public campground, Tugaloo provides 113 campsites as well as RV camping and cottage rentals. The campground offers tent campers the option of settling down at the developed campground or, for the more adventurous camper, taking a short hike to what Tugaloo calls its primitive campsites. Most sites include a view of Lavonia's 55,590-acre Lake Hartwell. Amenities for all campers include a visitor center, boat ramp, playground, coin laundry, showers, flush toilets and a 24-hour attendant. For water enthusiasts, Tugaloo provides boating and fishing, as well as a swimming beach, bathhouse and canoe rental. If you need to dry off, the campground offers picnic areas, volleyball, horseshoes, mini-golf, tennis courts and four miles of hiking trails. Feel free to bring man's best friend, just keep him on a leash. The park opens from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m., and office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call ahead for reservations; the park accepts all major credit cards.

The park offers 35 campsites. Golfers can take advantage of the Highland Walk Golf Course and its amenities--clubhouse, golf pro and junior/senior discounts. Camping and golf packages are available through the park. Other amenities include three playgrounds, a nature center, eight miles of hiking and bicycling trails, two fishing ponds and swimming.
