Fischer RCS Carbonlite
The Fischer RCS Carbonlite ($599-$649, 2010 prices), is available in several versions. These include Cold Stiff ($599), for hard-pack conditions; a Soft Track version ($599), for softer snow conditions; and the Hole Plus NIS ($649), which has a hole in the tip of the ski to reduce weight and an NIS system (Nordic integrated system). The NIS allows the skier to change the position of the binding on the ski for different snow conditions and flexes. The RCS Carbonlite skis all share the Air Core Carbonlite core, a construction using multiple layers of carbon fiber to shave weight while maintaining stiffness and rigidity. Pre-waxed bases reduce wax loss while skiing and improve speed.
Madshus Nanosonic Carbon NIS Skate
The Madshus Nanosonic Carbon NIS Skate ($599, 2010 prices), has a small amount of side cut to increase edging power during the stride. The Nanosonic Carbon is available in three versions: the R, for medium to normal hard-pack conditions, the HP, for hard-packed and icy conditions, and the SC for soft to medium snow conditions. All three versions use Madshus's P190 Nano base for speed and the Triaxial Carbon Construction for stiffness and lightweight performance. The NIS allows the user to move the binding to five different positions, for greater control over performance.
Atomic Race Skate
For those who don't need the absolute upper limits of performance, but still want a strong ski, the Atomic Race Skate ($299, 2010 prices), is a good match. The Densolite foam core makes the ski extremely lightweight. The Powercell center of the core helps with the kick stride by giving the ski more snap. The Race Skate is available in two versions: a hard base for hard-pack and icy snow, and a medium base for moderate conditions.
