Empire, Michigan Campgrounds

Empire is a rural area in Michigan located at the Northern tip of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. This township rests on the banks of Lake Michigan and provides visitors with several campgrounds, hiking trails and sandy beaches. Empire has very few stores and dining options although one convenience store exists in town to supply gas and snacks. The Manor on Glen Lake is the only restaurant in Empire and is open seven days a week.

Empire Township Campground

Empire Township Campground is open from May to September. This rustic campground is located in a wooded area and features eight campsites with electricity. No other facilities are available. The closest restaurants to the campground are located between five and 10 miles away. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is less than four miles away. Hikers will discover the end of the 22-mile long Betsie River Trail more than 12 miles south of the campground.

Platte River Campground

The Platte River Campground is located in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and stays open year-round. This campground has 333 vehicle accessible sites, with electricity for RVs and tents in a wooded area. A hike-in area near the main campground contains 25 individual sites for tents only and a separate group tent camping area for up to 25 people. Facilities at Platte River include drinking water, restrooms, dump station and coin-operated hot showers. A canoe launch, picnic area and fish cleaning station are located along the Platte River. Kayaking, swimming and tubing are also permitted on the river.

D.H. Day Campground

D.H. Day Campground is a rustic camping area in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Facilities include a dump station, vault toilets, drinking water and a firewood concession station. Each of the 88 campsites includes a metal fire ring and these sites are suitable for RVs or tents. Lake Michigan is located just north of the campground and features a sandy beach area. D.H Day Campground is open from April through November.
