The Juicery

This vegan cafe, located just three miles from Kittery in neighboring New Hampshire, is an herbivore's delight. As the name suggests, the restaurant offers a bevy of fresh-squeezed, organic juices and anti-oxidant rich smoothies. You also may add a variety of nutritional supplements to your smoothies and juices, including flax seed oil, green tea powder and protein powder. The menu also features a large selection of internationally inspired wraps including Mexican, Indonesian and Japanese.

Although the restaurant is small, if the weather is nice, there are many scenic outdoor spots nearby where you can enjoy your makeshift picnic. The staff at the Juicery is polite and very helpful.

Portsmouth Brewery

The Portsmouth Brewery is not a vegetarian or vegan restaurant, but its menu does offer options for hungry herbivores. This pub has been in business since 1991, and is open seven days a week.

Try the Brewery Burger, crafted with beans, brown rice, veggies, tofu and spices. You also can add on sauteed mushrooms or onions. Another tasty option is the more traditional Hummus and Baba Ganoosh, which comes with flatbread and veggies for dipping. Or try a garden salad topped with tempeh or the rice noodles in coconut milk.
