Thonotosassa, Florida, is about 15 miles northeast of Tampa and provides a variety of opportunities for outdoor recreation. There is fishing on Lake Thonotosassa and the nearby Hillsborough River, where canoeing and kayaking are also popular activities. The cypress swamps provide wildlife-viewing and photography opportunities, and hiking and cycling trails are nearby.

Southern Aire RV Park

The park has 450 sites and each can accommodate RVs up to 35 feet. Water, sewer and electrical hookups are available, and each site features a concrete patio. There are laundry facilities, a clubhouse and recreation building on-site. Amenities also include a heated swimming pool and whirlpool. Dogs are allowed. Daily, weekly and monthly rates are available, along with annual and six-month leases. Guests can fish in the on-site private lake, as well as on Lake Thonotosassa, which is 1.5 miles away.

Happy Traveler RV Park

The park is on the western side of Thonotosassa, near the Hillsborough River. All RV sites include water, sewer and electrical hookups, and pull-thru sites are available. Cable TV and telephone service can be activated at any site for extended-stay visitors, and Wi-Fi is available for an additional fee. Amenities include a swimming pool, shuffleboard courts and horseshoe pits. Three laundry facilities are available on-site. Happy Traveler is close to Lettuce Lake Regional Park and Trout Creek Park. Lettuce Lake is a 240-acre site with a cycling trail and jogging path. Lettuce Lake also has an interpretive center and observation tower, where visitors can view the cypress swamp. Trout Creek Park is a popular spot for hikers, kayakers and fishermen and has handicapped-accessible restrooms and picnic facilities.

Hillsborough River State Park

The park is 8 miles northeast of Thonotosassa along Route 301. Full-facility campsites, with water at every site and electricity at most, are available. The maximum length for recreational vehicles is 50 feet. Each site has a fire ring and picnic table, and a dump station is available. Restrooms, hot showers and laundry facilities are on-site. Amenities include a swimming pool, poolside cafe and convenience store. Hikers have four distinct trails that total 7.3 miles. There is cycling on the 1.6-mile Wetlands Restoration Nature Trail, in addition to the 2.2-mile Park Loop. There also is fishing, canoeing and kayaking.
