Alpine, Arizona, is located 250 miles east of Phoenix, nestled in the heart of the Apache National Forest. Alpine is surrounded by mountains covered in pine, fir and aspen forests. Abundant wildlife offers ample nature viewing. Hiking and mountain biking are popular on the area's many trails. In addition, well-stocked lakes provide recreational opportunities for anglers and boaters.

Luna Lake Campground

Luna Lake Campground is located five miles east of Alpine, Arizona and offers fifty 50 single-unit sites in addition to three group-camping sites. Each site features a picnic table, fire ring and cooking grill. Drinking water and vault toilets are available at the campsite. Trash dumpsters are available for the Memorial Day through Labor Day camping season. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy fishing on Luna Lake, which is regularly stocked with rainbow trout by the Arizona Game and Fish Department. A bait and tackle shop and boat rentals are available at the lake. Photographers and wildlife viewers will appreciate the area's elk herds and wild turkeys. Mountain biking is also a popular outdoor activity.

Alpine Divide Campground

Alpine Divide Campground is a small campground located just four miles north of Alpine. Its 12 sites are limited to tents and camping trailers under 12 feet long. Picnic tables, fire rings and cooking grills are included at every site. Vault toilets and potable water are available on site, although shower facilities are not. Wildlife viewing is a popular outdoor activity due to the elk, geese and squirrels that fill the Ponderosa pine forests surrounding the campsite. Ample hiking is also available on the Escudilla Mountain. The Escudilla National Recreation Trail is a three-mile trek to the top of Arizona's third-highest mountain. At the summit, on a clear day you can see as far as the San Francisco peaks near Flagstaff.

Diamond Rock Campground

Diamond Rock Campground is located on the east fork of the Black Rock River,just 14 miles west of Alpine. A total of 11 sites are available, in addition to a few Adirondack-style shelters built in the 1930s. Each site comes with a rock fire ring, and a group tent site is also available. Vault toilets are available, although showers are not. All sites are available on a first come first served basis. Diamond Rock Campground can serve as a base camp for those wanting to explore the Blue Range Primitive Area and its 25 miles of hiking trails.
