The Best Women's Skate Skis

The Best Women's Skate Skis
Skate skiing as a race discipline that has grown popular in recent years, and with it, the need for women's specific models. Skate skis are slightly shorter than the normal track racing skis to accommodate the V-skate stride used. Women's skis have a different flex pattern and are often softer, to work better with women's different center of gravity and lower body weight.

Madshus Metis Skate

The Madshus Metis Skate ($310, 2010 prices) is the flagship women's skate model from one of the leaders in cross country ski development. Many top racers turn to Madshus. The Metis Skate has a poly core with torsion cap construction, making the ski light and quick. The 4 mm of sidecut ensure the ski is stable at speed. The base is Madshus' proprietary P170 Nano Racing base, for extra speed, and is waxable for better performance. It comes in lengths of 175 cm, 180 cm and 185 cm.

Rossignol X-Ium NIS2 W

The Rossignol X-Ium NIS2 W ($549, 2010 prices) is Rossignol's World Cup racing performance skate ski for women, featuring the NIS (nordic integrated system) integrated boot/binding system that allows the skier to adjust the position of the binding forward or aft in five positions. The ski is made with the Activ'Cap construction, which combines a soft core for flex in bump areas with lateral rigidity for stability when going straight. The Cobra Racing sidecut is designed to work with the skier's skate stride to accelerate into each stride faster. Like all premium race skis, it is waxable. It is available in lengths of 168 cm, 174 cm, 181 cm and 187 cm.

Fischer Skate Pro My Style

Fischer Skate Pro My Style ($229, 2010 prices) is a more recreational-oriented skate ski for women that has a longer camber pocket to give women more stability on glide portion of the skate stride. It has the same World Cup sidecut as Fischer's race skis so the ski accelerates faster and stays on the snow longer. The Air Core construction borrows technology from the aerospace industry to make the ski might a lighter weight without sacrificing lateral and torsional stability. The ski comes with the NIS plate for easy adjustability of the binding position on the ski. It is available in lengths of 167 cm, 172 cm, 177 cm and 182 cm.
