Monterey, California, is located one hundred and twenty miles south of San Francisco, along the Pacific coast. The two million acre Los Padres National Forest is located just south of Monterey, and a wealth of state and local parks and forest lands are close by, providing ample opportunity for outdoor recreation. The Big Sur coastal region, located south of Monterey along highway one, has drawn both artists and adventures for years to experience its hiking, camping and natural beauty.

Laguna Seca Recreation Area

Laguna Seca Recreation Area is located ten miles east of Monterey, halfway between Salinas and the Monterey peninsula. The park features accommodations for both RV and tent campers, but tent campers should look for the Grand Prix "A" campground, which boasts 70 sites suitable for tent camping. These sites feature no direct utility hookups, and each includes a picnic table and a fire pit. Hot showers and water access are available on site and a playground is available for small children. Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate Laguna Seca Recreation Area, primary for its cycling and access to miles of trails on the former Fort Ord military base. Every April the Sea Otter Classic, which bills itself as the largest cycling festival and consumer trade show in North America, takes place in Laguna Seca.

Monterey Veteran's Memorial Park is a fifty acre park located within the city limits of Monterey that combines tent camping with some notable outdoor attractions. The park features forty sites, each of which includes a picnic table and fire pit. Water, restrooms and shower facilities are located on site. In addition there are two youth group areas that can accommodate up to one hundred people, each with a large double BBQ pit and picnic tables. Monterey Veteran's Memorial Park is located just three miles east of the SFB Morse Botanical Reserve, and it features eighty-six acres of protected woodland in the Del Monte Forest. Hiking and bird watching are popular activities.

Andrew Molera State Park

Andrew Molera State Park is located just twenty-five miles south of Monterey along California's highway one. Andrew Molera State Park is still a relatively undeveloped park, featuring twenty-four primitive campsites that allow a maximum of four people per site. Restrooms and picnic facilities are available in the park, although showers and laundry facilities are not. A visitor center with interpretive programs and exhibits is available on site. Popular outdoor activities include hiking, cycling, picnicking, nature viewing and photography. Andrew Molera State Park has direct access to the Pacific Ocean, making surfing and swimming especially popular attractions.
