More than 32 miles of trails traverse the wilderness including 12 miles of the Florida National Scenic Trail. Freshwater fishing is available in the ponds and rivers and birders will find an abundance of avian species ranging from bald eagles to the threatened Florida scrub jay. Lake Wales Ridge State Forest
Primitive campsites lie along the 20 miles of the Florida National Scenic Trail cutting through Lake Wales Ridge State Forest east of Frostproof. Many additional miles of linear and loop trails run through the forests that lie upon a natural ridge of the Florida peninsula. Four of these trails are included in the Florida Division of Forestry's Trailwalker Hiking Program. These memorable hikes through scrub forests where red-shouldered hawks keep a vigilant eye lead to unexpected discoveries such as lush ravines cut by slow moving rivers over many millennia. The campsites are truly primitive requiring campers to port all necessities including drinking water.
