Covington, Georgia is about 25 miles east of Atlanta, right off I-20. It is a good location from which to explore central Georgia's natural attractions, as the area to the south and east of Covington is ringed with state parks and wildlife management areas, as well as the Oconee National Forest. Campers looking to pitch their tents in the region around Covington will find a mix of public and private campgrounds to accommodate them.

Hard Labor Creek State Park

The Hard Labor Creek State Park is roughly 15 miles west of Covington and conveniently located off I-20. This 5,804-acre park offers a 49 joint tent-and-RV site campground. The typical campsite consists of a paved driveway, picnic table and a lightly wooded, grassy area that can serve as a tent pitch. The campground is serviced by coin laundries and comfort stations. Other accommodations are also available in the form of rental cabins. The state park has two lakes that offer a swimming beach and fishing, as well as two and a half miles of hiking trails. It is also an equestrian activity area, with stables and a 22-mile riding trail. Finally, Hard Labor Creek State Park has an 18-hole public golf course.

Elks Honey Creek Campground

Part of the Elks Aidmore Children's Center, the 141-acre Elks Honey Creek Campground is a good choice for a family camping trip. For example, in spite of the forested, natural setting, the campground is still close enough to the Atlanta suburbs that it gets pizza delivery. The location is only 10 miles to the east of Covington. It offers only tent sites and spartan cottages, so there is not an RV or camping trailer to be found. The campground is serviced by a central pavilion with a bathhouse, and for outdoor activities offers its own fishing pond, as well as access to Elks Honey Creek and five miles of private hiking trails.

Indian Springs State Park

Located about 20 miles south of Covington, this 528-acre state park has a campground organized into three loops, with a total of 88 joint tent-and-RV sites. Each camping loop is serviced by its own coin laundry and bathhouse. While the camping sites are surrounded by thick forest, they are paved with gravel, so a floor-pad for your tent will be necessary. The park is centered on McIntosh Lake, which offers lake swimming, boating and fishing opportunities, and boat rentals are available.
