RV Campgrounds Near Machipongo, Virginia
Located on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, Machipongo is a small town about 23 miles north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel along Highway 13, the main route down the peninsula. Camping on the Eastern Shore allows visitors to explore inland trails, shoreline and saltwater areas. Those traveling in an RV can choose from a number of park options on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

Kiptopeke State Park

Located a few miles south of Machipongo, the Kiptopeke State Park offers primitive and full-hookup (20-, 30- or 50-amp) sites. The park camping area, which is open March 1 through the first Monday in December, can accommodate RVs up to 40 feet. Weekly rentals are required between Memorial Day and Labor Day. During the summer, swimming is available in the Chesapeake Bay. On the park's south beach, you can go boating or crabbing. Kiptopeke State Park is known as a bird-watching spot: It has been home for decades to avian population studies sponsored by the Coastal Virginia Wildlife Observatory There are also over four miles of nature trails in the park that are ideal for walking, jogging or biking.

Toms Cove Park

Toms Cove Park is situated on Chincoteague Island, which is more than an hour north of Machipongo. The park overlooks the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and Assateague Island National Seashore Park. This campground has full RV hookups, as well as seasonal and year-round sites. Toms Cove Park appeals to nature lovers: fishing, boating, crabbing and hiking options are available. There are three fishing piers within the park, as well as a boat ramp, marina, and clubhouse with video games and pool tables. The park is open from March 1 until November 30.

Tall Pines Harbor Campground

Located north of Machipongo near the Maryland state line, Tall Pines Harbor Campground offers bayfront, waterview, and pull-through sites for RVs with full hookups. All of the sites, including the primitive tent sites, include a picnic table and fire ring. On-site are a camp store, laundry facility and restrooms with hot showers. Visitors can engage in kayaking, canoeing, crabbing, fishing or bird-watching directly from the park. Planned activities for the family are scheduled throughout the year from a Memorial Day luau to theme weekends like Wizard of Oz and chocolate lovers, or "Pamper the Camper" on Mother's Day.
