The Body
The body of the reel is a light metal case that contains the other moving parts. The body breaks down into three parts. The front cover has the hole for the line to feed through and is shaped like a shallow cone. The rear cover holds the trigger for releasing the line. The central part of the body includes the mount for the rod and the holes for mounting the handle, which supports the rest of the reel.
Handle Assembly
The handle mounts on the side of the body, with a shaft running into the reel itself. The handle and the grips are the only moving part of the reel that is external to the body. The handle mounts on the crank shaft, which drives the movement of the reel, and includes the drag star and drag slide, which work to keep the line from coming off the reel too quickly when a fish takes it.
Trigger Assembly
Like all spin casting reels, the trigger is located at the rear of the reel. It is mounted with a small spring, which gives it return action when released. The trigger locks into place on the central shaft of the reel, so that when it is depressed, the reel spins freely, allowing the angler to cast his line by pushing the trigger while flicking the rod forward.
The Spool
The spool is the heart of any fishing reel. The spool in a Zebco One is mounted on the central shaft of the reel, which is driven by a cog attached to the handle. The spool itself holds the fishing line, and is in turn mounted on several washers. When the trigger at the rear of the reel is depressed, the clutch ring and bait clicker, both of which work to regulate the speed of the spool, are disengaged, allowing the spool to spin freely.
