The city is set just inside the massive Island Park Caldera, and is on the road to Yellowstone National Park. Outdoor types will find it difficult not to shout joyously while exploring activities that include trekking through grizzly country at Targhee Creek, snowshoeing through Targhee National Forest after a January snowstorm or kayaking through rough whitewater on the Coffee Pot Rapids.

Valley View RV Campground & Laundromat is located 10 minutes from the center of town. This park offers 50 pull-through sites. Full hookups are available and include 20/30/50-amp service. The campsite also has Wi-Fi, tent sites, bathrooms and showers. Pets are welcome. Road bikers who think they have the lung capacity and nerve can attempt the 23-mile loop to the top of Sawtelle Peak and back. The lung capacity is for the way up, the nerve for the mad descent down.

RedRock RV & Camping Park

Red Rock RV & Camping Park is located 29 minutes from the center of Island Park. This RV park offers 54 back-in and pull-through sites. Full hookups are available. Forty sites have 50-amp service. The park has a convenience store, dog run, playground, restrooms, showers, laundry room and tenting sites. Red Rock is a 21 minute drive from Henry's Lake State Park, where guests can release their frustrations from a day on the road by fly-fishing for rainbow trout.

Buffalo Run Campground

Buffalo Run Campground is six minutes from the center of town. Buffalo run offers 42 back-in and pull-through sites. Full hookups are available on 18 sites, the remainder offer water and electric only. The campground has a dump station, satellite television, restaurant, snack bar, campfire pits and Wi-Fi. Those itching to get into the wild can drive 11 minutes to Harriman State Park and hike through the park's 20 miles of trails while keeping an eye open for bighorn sheep, elk and trumpeter swans.
