Campgrounds in Iron Range, Minnesota

Campgrounds in Iron Range, Minnesota
The Iron Range is a vast area of northeastern Minnesota, so-named for its heavily-mined iron deposits, stretching through seven counties. In spite of the iron mines, it is still a region of great natural beauty, known for its plethora of small lakes and deep forests of birch, maple, oak, pine, poplar and spruce. Campers in the Iron Range district will find themselves with ample choices among the private and public campgrounds, and also among the plethora of outdoor activities offered in the region.

McKinley Park Campground

McKinley Park Campground is a private camping facility located on the shores of Lake Vermilion. It is a mixed RV and tent campground, with most of the tent sites being located together in a separate area. There are also two primitive, hike-in sites on the property's waterfront. The campground is serviced by showers, a coin laundry, a picnic area with fire rings, and a camp store with bait and firewood. It also has a boat ramp, fish cleaning station and a swimming beach. The campground itself offers boating and fishing, while other outdoor activities like hiking and spelunking can be pursued at nearby Soudan Underground Mine State Park.

Silver Island Lake Campground

Superior National Forest offers a vast array of camping opportunities, among them what it calls "Rustic Campgrounds: Car Camping Without the Crowd." These are small, isolated campgrounds with a parking space, fire grates, picnic tables and basic outhouses, but no other facilities. A good example is the 8-site campground at Silver Island Lake, about five miles from Wheeler Landing and 18 miles northeast of Isabella. The campground offers walleye and pike fishing on Silver Island Lake, as well as plenty of opportunities for wildlife viewing. As the campground is part of a national forest and in an area with no trash pick-up, campers are required to exercise "leave no trace" and "pack-in, pack-out" procedures. Also, as there is no water tap at the campground, campers will be reliant either on bottled water or treating local sources.

Shagawa Inn Resort

Located on Shagawa Lake, the Shagawa Inn Resort offers a campground near a large town and with a range of accommodations options. The campground itself is in a pine forest overlooking the lake, and offers grassy joint tent-and-RV site. Each comes with a picnic table, barbecue grill and water and electrical hookups. It is serviced by a central bathhouse, and tent campers receive cheaper rates. Other acommodations at the lake are available in the form of motel rooms and rental cabins.

Marcell Area Backcountry Campsites

Chippewa National Forest also has a wide range of camping options, including no-facilities, totally primitive backcountry camping. An example includes the Marcell Area, which covers Spider Lake, Trout Lake and the birch forest of the Soumi Hills. There are no reservations or permits required to use the Marcell Area's backcountry campsites, but the forest service does request that you notify them of your presence. All of the Marcell Area's campsites are hike-in and are on a strict "leave no trace" footing. Backpackers camping overnight in the Marcell Area will be entirely reliant on treating local water during their stay, and will need to dig their own latrines and exercise proper sanitation practices. The Marcell Area is in the vicinity of Soumi, not far from Route 38.
