Ski Resorts in Boone, North Carolina
Named after frontiersman Daniel Boone, the town of Boone, North Carolina is located in the northwestern corner of the state. With its proximity to the Blue Ridge Mountains, Boone has become a haven for outdoor enthusiasts by offering activities like fly fishing, hiking, white-water rafting, and skiing. There are more than five ski resorts within 20 miles of the town, including Sugar Mountain Resort--the largest ski resort in North Carolina.

Appalachian Ski Mountain

Located about five miles outside of Boone, Appalachian Ski Mountain was opened in 1962 and was the first ski resort in North Carolina's High Country. Both skiers and snowboarders of all levels are welcome to take advantage of the resort's 11 slopes, five lifts, and 27 acres of skiable land. In addition, the resort offers night skiing until 10 p.m. every day of operation and a 200-foot observation deck if you need to take a break. Other amenities include a restaurant, video game room, ski shop, and a nursery for children ages one to four. Appalachian Ski Mountain is open from mid-November through April.

Ski Beech

Nestled in the gorgeous Blue Ridge Mountains, Ski Beech is about 15 miles from Boone and about 50 miles from the city of Hickory. The resort features the highest skiing area in the entire state with a 5,506-foot peak. It also has 15 slopes and nine lifts, which are open both day and night. If you need to take a break from skiing or snowboarding, Ski Beech offers other types of winter sports as well, including tubing, ice-skating, and mountain biking. After a long day of activities, feel free to relax at the resort's Beech Tree Village where you can find numerous shops and restaurants.

Sugar Mountain Resort

Boasting eight lifts and 115 acres of skiable land, the Sugar Mountain Resort is the biggest ski resort in the state. Guests of Sugar Mountain have 20 slopes to ski or snowboard on--from beginner's areas like the Magic Carpet and Easy Street to expert-level trails like Boulder Dash and Tom Terrific. Along with its ski slopes, the resort also offers a variety of outdoor activities, including a 700-foot tubing park and an outdoor ice-skating rink. Guided snow-shoeing tours are available too. If you plan on visiting the resort with your family, be sure to take advantage of the special rates for children 11 and under.
