Though not a battle site during the Revolutionary War, Wilkesboro and its colonial residents played a key role in the struggle for America's independence. Today, the historic city in North Carolina is better known for its majestic beauty. Situated in the foothills of the Brushy Mountains and the Blue Ridge Mountains, it's a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. In addition to hiking, you can enjoy kayaking, fishing, mountain biking and exploring 19th-century log cabins.

Leatherwood Mountains

This wilderness resort is located about 14 miles west of Wilkesboro, in full view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Cabins are available in a variety of settings--from woods and valleys to the tops of mountains. They range from one to four bedrooms, and not only accommodate couples and large groups, but also pets--including horses (some feature nearby barns and pastures). Most of the cabins boast a wide range of amenities from fireplaces and grills to flat-screen TVs with satellite service, laundry facilities and outdoor spas.

Fall Creek Cabins

About 45 minutes northwest of Wilkesboro, Fall Creek Cabins has eight cedar cabins available for vacation rental. All of them are two stories and feature stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The cabins are fully furnished, and the kitchens are stocked with cookware, silverware and dishes. Modern amenities include free Wi-Fi and digital TV. In addition to a VCR and DVD player, the cabins have a communal library filled with movies, games and puzzles. Outdoor enthusiasts can take advantage of a walking trail and picnic area at the nearby Green Branch Creek.

Mountain View Lodge and Cabins

Mountain View has eight pet-friendly cabins located on five acres of woods less than 30 minutes northwest of Wilkesboro. In addition to modern creature comforts like big beds, fully equipped kitchens, cable TV and Jacuzzi tubs, they offer fireplaces, barbecues and decks with rocking chairs and swings. The Mountain-to-Sea hiking trail begins from the driveway of the Mountain View Lodge. You'll have plenty of wildlife viewing opportunities.

ADN Log Cabin Rentals

Only 15 minutes from Boone and 40 miles west of Wilkesboro are four secluded cabins--Abby's Place, Abundant Life, Attaboy Nick's and Attaboy Jake's. Located on Willow Mountain, they each offer two master bedrooms and kitchens. The cabins have wraparound porches with rocking chairs, hot tubs, gas fireplaces and cable TV in each bedroom.
