Fur trappers first came to the area around Elko, Nevada, in the early 1800s, followed by settlers brought by the Central Pacific Railroad. Elko still retains its reputation as the "capital of inland ranching," with cowboys still working the land. This mining and resort town is visited by people looking to golf, gamble and hike in the temperate, high-desert climate. Nearby you'll find the Wildhorse Reservoir, Jarbidge Wilderness Area and Ruby Mountains. There is a National Scenic Byway into the canyon, and you'll also discover alpine lakes for fishing and hunting.
