State Campgrounds Near Merritt Island, Florida
Located on the beautiful Space Coast of Florida, Merritt Island is a residential community and also home to the Kennedy Space Center and a 140,000-acre National Wildlife Refuge that holds more than 1,500 species of plants and animals. If you're visiting the island and want to camp, there are several campgrounds from which to choose that are run by state and local government. Whether you're traveling in your RV or just bringing along a tent, you'll find an ideal spot near Merritt Island.

Manatee Hammock

Manatee Hammock Campground is situated along the Indian River Lagoon, just across from Merritt Island and the NASA Shuttle Landing Facility. The sites here are mostly shaded by a heavy canopy of trees, and it has 187 RV sites with full hookups as well as a tent-camping area. You'll have access to the recreation hall where you'll find the park's swimming pool, shuffleboard courts and a horseshoe pit. Manatee Hammock Campground is ideal for avid fishermen as you have access to shoreline fishing and a fishing pier. The campground also offers the perfect location to watch a space shuttle launch.

Sebastian Inlet State Park

Located a few miles south of Merritt Island, Sebastian Inlet State Park is perched on a narrow strip of land between the Indian River Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean, right on the famous A1A highway. This state park offers sites with full water and electric hookups as well as primitive tent sites. Saltwater fishing is popular in this park, and many surfers flock here for the good breaks, where surf tournaments often are held. The Indian River Lagoon is perfect for canoeing or kayaking, and 3 miles of the wide, sandy beach offer great opportunities for swimming, shell collecting, scuba diving, snorkeling and just plain relaxing.

Wickham Park

Wickham Park Campground is situated on 391 acres of land just a few miles south of Merritt Island, on the mainland. This park is perfect for nature lovers, as it has a 1.5 mile trail through woods and by lakes that is perfect for joggers or bikers, and there are even horse trails and a stable if you like to ride. The campground has 88 sites with full hookups and 22 overflow sites. You'll find plenty of activities here from archery, horseshoes and volleyball, to a disc golf course, two lakes for swimming and even a dog park for man's best friend. Though the sites are clustered together in the center of the park, the woods around them still afford privacy and seclusion for your camping trip to Wickham Park.
