Shelbyville sits at the southern end of Lake Shelbyville, southeast of Springfield, Illinois. Many of the natural resources of the area are managed by the Army Corps of Engineers, including several campgrounds and access areas. Travelers will find plenty of summer and winter activities from golf to cross-country skiing.

Coon Creek Access Area

Coon Creek Access Area, on the west side of Lake Shelbyville, has 224 campsites with electric hookups. Six sites are available with full hookups. Campers also have access to flush toilets, showers, a laundry area and a dump station. The park provides a boat ramp, dock and beach. Visitors can try a game on the basketball court or hike Coon Creek Nature Trail. While not a long trail, it offers a lookout tower and scenic views. Wolf Creek State Park is less than 10 miles from Coon Creek. The park has a 15 mile trail that accommodates snowmobiles, hiking and horseback riding and swimming is allowed at the park beach.

Lithia Springs Access Area

Lithia Springs Access Area, named a Top 100 Family Campgrounds, is on the east side of Lake Shelbyville. The campground offers 123 sites with electric hookups. Limited full hookups are also available. The park amenities include a dump station, flush toilets, showers and a laundry facility. The campground is a good choice for those who wish to boat along the lake, as this access area has a boat ramp and dock and is adjacent to a full service marina. The park also has a beach for swimming and picnic areas. Several hiking trails wrap around the land surrounding Lake Shelbyville.

Camp Lakewood

For those who want to stay near the interstate and plan day trips to the Shelbyville area, Camp Lakewood is another camping option. The camp is just north of Effingham, less than 30 miles south of Shelbyville. The camp sits along the shore of Lake Pauline, where guests can canoe or kayak. The park's sites include trees, but these have been maintained to provide unfettered RV access to each spot. Full hookups are available with 30- and 50-amp electric, free Wi-Fi and cable TV upon request. The park has a dump station and camp store, recreation field and a game room. Reservations are recommended.
