The Best 10 Speed Bicycle Chains

The Best 10 Speed Bicycle Chains
The chain drive system as used on the modern bicycle is a marvel of efficiency, approaching 98 percent on a properly aligned and lubricated configuration. On a multi-speed derailleur-equipped bike, the chain is designed to be both efficient and flexible enough to move through a wide range of gearing options without slipping, skipping or binding.

Chain Sizes

Bicycle chains are available in two different widths, both using the same pitch. These are 1/2 by 1/8 and 1/2 by 3/32, with the 1/2 referring to the pitch and the 1/8 and 3/32 referring to the chain width. In almost all cases it is the 3/32 size that is used for bikes with a derailleur setup. The slightly larger (by 1/32 inch) 1/8 chain is used for single speed and BMX bikes and often by those with a hub gear transmission.

Chain Configuration and Design

Most modern chains are bushingless. The advantages of the bushingless chain over the standard chain include fewer parts (8 vs. 10), lighter weight, greater flexibility and reduced friction. Beyond that, the best manufacturers put their best efforts into chains designed for multi-speed bikes. Construction techniques such as the use of specialty alloys that reduce friction, custom formulated coatings that help resist rust and prevent dirt and road grime from adhering, and optimized design for easy derailing and efficiency at less than optimum chainlines are characteristic of the best manufacturers.

Which Chain To Choose

Selecting the best chain will be determined by the uses (and abuses) to which the bike will be put. Read the literature supplied by the manufacturer and see which particular design and construction features will be the best fit for the circumstances. Don't pay extra for features that won't be of use. Look closely at chains produced by Izumi, KMC, Shimano, SRAM and Wippermann. All make excellent products and have good supporting literature from which to make a determination. Also, remember that it is a good idea to replace any worn or broken cogs concurrently with replacing the chain.
