Hinesville is a small, suburban Georgia town near Savannah, adjacent to the Fort Steward U.S. Army base. Despite its proximity to a military compound, there are ways to escape to the wilderness. For RV campers, there are a few sites that will provide all the amenities needed for a short- or long-term stay in Hinesville.

Sunset Campground

Sunset Campground caters to campers of all varieties. RVers with big rigs are welcome and free to use one of the many pull-through sites. Tenters are also welcome. The park comes will many sites with full hook-ups for water, sewer, and electricity (50 amps). To get away from the park, head to Middleton Lake, where you'll be able to walk along the edge on a hiking trail.

Lake Harmony RV Park

Lake Harmony RV Park, located in Townsend, about 45 minutes from downtown Hinesville, is located nearly on the Gulf of Mexico in deep, southern Georgia. This RV park offers various amenities, including free wireless Internet, full hookups, RV storage facilities, laundry facilities and a large meeting room for social events. There is a bait shop for the anglers. To find trails, go to Richard J Reynolds State Wildlife Refuge, about a 15-minute drive from Lake Harmony.

Savannah South KOA

Savannah South KOA (part of a nationally recognized chain) is located in Richmond Hill, about 35 miles from downtown Hinesville. This site offers RVers all the amenities found at all KOA campgrounds: full hookups for RVs (water, sewer, electric), pull-through sites, 50-amp service, and free cable TV. In addition, there's a large pavilion for picnicking and wireless Internet. To go get your boots muddy, head over to Fort McAllister State Historic Park on the Ogeechee River, where you'll find abundant nature walks and more strenuous hiking trails.
