Ski Resorts Close to Albuquerque
Albuquerque is located an hour southwest of Santa Fe in central New Mexico. Hiking and mountain biking are popular in the Sandia mountains east of town, and Petroglyph National Monument is just west of town. Sandia Peak Ski Area is just east of Albuquerque and is the prime skiing destination for the city's residents.

Sandia Peak

Sandia Peak is a small ski area 15 miles northeast of Albuquerque that is generally open from the beginning of January to mid-March. The resort has five lifts and 30 trails, with a terrain breakdown of 35 percent beginner, 55 percent intermediate, and 10 percent expert. The peak elevation is 10,378 feet, and the vertical drop of 1,700 feet. Sandia averages 125 inches of snow per year. The resort also has a terrain park.

Ski Santa Fe

Ski Santa Fe is located 16 miles northeast of Santa Fe in the Sangre de Cristo mountains. The base elevation is at 10,350 feet, making it one of the highest ski areas in the United States. The summit elevation is at 12,075 feet, offering a vertical drop of 1,725 and 665 acres of skiing. The mountain has seven lifts and 72 trails, with 20 percent beginner, 40 percent intermediate, and 40 percent expert. Ski Santa Fe averages 225 inches of snowfall per year. The resort is typically open from Thanksgiving to early-April.

Pajarito Mountain

Pajarito Mountain is almost due north of Albuquerque, but the driving distance is 100 miles, as you have to go through Santa Fe to get there. Pajarito is a small mountain whose base is at 9,000 feet and summit is at 10,440 feet, offering a vertical drop of 1,440 feet. Pajarito has six lifts and 40 trails. The terrain breakdown is 20 percent beginner, 50 percent intermediate, and 30 percent expert. The mountain is open from Thanksgiving to early April, has 750 acres of skiing, and averages 150 inches of snowfall per year.
