Campgrounds Near Long Key, Florida

Campgrounds Near Long Key, Florida
Part of the famous chain of southern Florida islands, Long Key is home to Long Key State Park. This park offers the outdoor enthusiast the opportunity to both camp and do some nature watching in the surf and sun, but it is not the only state park in the Keys that does so. There are other Key-based parks in the nearby area, some of which offer snorkeling sites on top of everything else.

Long Key State Park

Long Key State Park's campground offers 60 campsites, all with views of the Atlantic Ocean. The campsites are joint RV and tent sites, so they all have water and electrical hookups, in addition to a picnic table and barbecue grill. The campground is serviced by a trio of shower houses and a dump station. It accepts well-behaved pets, but if you bring your dog, remember to keep her on a leash, and pets are not welcome at the park's beach. In addition to that beach, the park has canoe rentals, saltwater fishing and a short nature trail.

Curry Hammock State Park

Curry Hammock State Park is located on the Middle Keys, the same group of islets as Marathon Airport, and is 13 miles down the highway from Long Key. The campground consists of a mix of 28 tent and RV sites. The sites that are usually reserved for tent campers consist of a gravel parking space, sand tent pad, picnic table, barbecue grill, and water and electrical hookups. The campground is serviced by a solar-powered shower house and composting toilets. Curry Hammock State Park also has canoeing/sea kayaking, saltwater fishing and some snorkeling areas off its beach. Pets are welcome, but as at Long Key they are banned from the beach and dogs must be kept on a leash.

Bahia Honda State Park

Bahia Honda State Park has a whole little island all to itself, and is located about 30 miles down the highway from Long Key. There are three campgrounds on Bahia Honda: Bayside, Buttonwood and Sandspur. Buttonwood is meant for trailers and RVs, while Bayside and Sandspur are oriented to tent camping. Sandspur has a mix of tent-only and joint tent-small RV (14-foot maximum) sites. All of Sandspur's campsites have a picnic table, barbecue grill and water, while the joint tent-RV sites have electrical hookups. Bayside has only eight campsites, each with a picnic table, barbecue grill and water. The camping facilities consist of a shower house and dumping station, but both of these are at Buttonwood.

Bahia Honda State Park is well-known for its white sand beaches, and offers a host of water sports to its visitors. There are designated snorkeling areas and some shallow-water scuba diving just offshore. The park also has a boat ramp, saltwater fishing, three nature trails and bird watching.
