Asheville, North Carolina, is surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, which provide a plethora of hiking opportunities. Urban hikers can take on the hilly downtown, with all its eclectic stores and restaurants. While there are a number of hotels in Asheville, including the Inn on Biltmore Estate and the Grove Park Inn, hikers also will find a broad choice of cabin house rentals in town.

Asheville Cabins of Willow Winds

Willow Winds is a luxury cabin facility open year-round, and guests can take advantage of seasonal activities in the area, ranging from whitewater rafting to skiing and leaf watching. Cabins include hot tubs, stone fireplaces, fully equipped kitchens, cable-hooked, flat-screen TVs, and washers and dryers. The property is surrounded by trees, on-site hiking trails and a stocked trout pond. There are two playgrounds for children and a full-time professional staff on hand to act as guides and make suggestions for nearby eating and recreation. There are 25 luxury cabins from which to choose. Guests at Willow Winds can register for packages that include tickets to the Biltmore Estate, a historic 250-room home, winery and garden built by George Vanderbilt.

Heavenly Hideaway

Heavenly Hideaway is a 750-square-foot cabin about 11 miles from downtown Asheville. Built in 2007, the cabin was designed with couples in mind; it's got cathedral ceilings, log cabin interiors and king-sized beds. There is a gas fireplace with satellite TV, an outdoor hot tub and a fully equipped gourmet kitchen. The cabin is secluded on a 200-acre estate, with a mountain view off the back deck. Trails run through the property. There are wild turkeys that live here as well as a pond for fishing or swimming. The farm on site runs a pick-your-own blueberry operation and sells eggs laid by its free-range chickens and fresh honey from its beehives.

Shoji Retreat

Shoji Retreat is a full-service spa at what the proprietors call "2,500 feet above stress level." There is a cabin lodge and a loft available for nightly rentals that put guests steps away from a fireside massage and a personal outdoor hot tub. Six can sleep at the lodge, which has a stone fireplace and a fully equipped gourmet kitchen. The loft is designed to sleep two. Services offered by the Shoji, which is open for massage and spa treatments, include Swedish, hot stone and deep tissue massage as well as herbal body wraps.
